Family entertainment center Cluggy's to close in 2023

After more than 30 years as Franklin County's one-stop shop for family fun, Cluggy's Family Amusement Center will close next year.

The Chambersburg business announced in a Facebook post Wednesday night that it will close on Jan. 23 and the owners will retire.

"We would like to thank with the greatest appreciation all of the customers who visited and supported our small business over the past 3 decades," owners John and Mary McGough wrote in the post. "With your support Cluggys was able to provide family fun and entertainment for our community. We were also able to provide employment for hundreds of our community and we are eternally grateful to them for their loyal service. Many thanks also go to our community partners and business vendors who were integral to the success of Cluggys."

The McGoughs said they hoped to find a new operator to take over the business, but the effort was unsuccessful.

A message left for the McGoughs at Cluggy's was not immediately returned on Thursday.

The history of Cluggy's

Cluggy's name comes from its original owner, Cecil Clugston. A brick-laying teacher at what was then known as Franklin County Vocational Technical High School, Clugston opened Cluggy's in the summer of 1991, according to reporting from that time in the Public Opinion.

Clugston rented two unused courts at the Greystone Health and Racket Club and installed batting cages, an indoor driving range, slam-dunk basketball courts, pool tables and arcade games. The business grew from there.

The activity line-up has changed over the years. Today, Cluggy's offers batting cages, mini golf, rollerball mini bowling, arcade games and play tunnels for kids.

The McGoughs became the owners of Cluggy's in early 1999, according to past reporting.

Cluggy's home has always been at 393 Bedington Blvd., just off Walker Road.

It remained neighbors with the Greystone sports club for a couple years, until Penn National Off-Track Wagering opened in that space in 1994. The betting parlor closed in 2019.
