Faler's Lady Trojans capture title at 50th Grove City Kiser Classic, Josie Lewis MVP

Dec. 12—GROVE CITY — Not every great basketball player becomes a great coach. But any good coach is smart enough to ensure his or her point guard is an extension of themself on the floor.

So it is with Greenville Head Coach Samantha Faler and junior Josie Lewis.

Lewis led Greenville to the championship of the 50th annual Kiser Classic via a 43-32 victory over host Grove City on Saturday night.

The Lady Trojans tallied 17 fourth-period points en route to the tourney title. Lewis, with 13 points, was chosen tourney MVP, while her backcourt running mate, Anna Harpst, had 10 points — 7 during the final frame.

Faler was inducted into the Edinboro University Hall of Fame following a standout career, and the 1st-year Lady Trojans' taskmaster has put the ball in Lewis' hands.

"She's absolutely an extension of me. She's a fantastic competitor. ... I think she's the best point guard in the state of Pa.," gushed Faler, a 1,000-plus-point career scorer at Edinboro.

There were a quartet of ties and half-dozen lead changes. Greenville led 26-25 entering the final frame. But when Lewis and Harpst hit back-to-back triples with 3:56 remaining the Lady Trojans took an insurmountable 38-28 lead.

"We had a good 'Come to Jesus' moment with our coach in the locker room (at halftime), and we came together as a family in that fourth quarter ... worked out butts off, and really focused on the defense," related Lewis.

To her point, Greenville coerced Grove City into 16 turnovers and a 9-for-45 shooting performance.

"Our coach says she is a defensive coach, so we always put defense first ... and we're ready, we're fresh in that fourth quarter, workin' our butts off just like the first, the second and the third. We're always up in the passing lanes, and we can work teams like that," Lewis related.

While Greenville was not good shooting during the game's first 3 quarters, shooting 10 for 44, during the game's final 8 minutes the Lady Trojans tallied 5 of 12 floor shots, including a trio of treys — 2 from Harpst.

"She's my partner in crime. We run and gun, we love to shoot, we have good shots. We know, if one person isn't shooting well the other person can shoot, too. We really focus on finding each other, working with each other. We trust each other a lot, and I wouldn't want to play with another guard," Lewis said in praise of Harpst, who was chosen to the All-Tourney Team.

In addition to Lewis and Harpst, Grace Cano collected a game-high 12-point, 15-rebound double-double for Greenville (2-0). Reese Schaller also dished out a team-high 3 assists, and Sarah Mallek mustered 6 points, 4 rebounds and an assist.

Grove City (1-1) was led by Delany Callahan, who copped 15 points and 9 caroms; however, she was the only Lady Eagle to end in double figures. Emma Santom scored 5 points and snared 6 rebounds, Hannah Reiber recorded 3 dimes, and Selah Severson snared 6 rebounds for 1st-year Grove City Coach Dennis Ranker.

Lewis is a versatile athlete who looks as natural throwing a football as she does launching a 3-point shot or orchestrating the offense.

"My dad (Steve) has been a Greenville football coach for about thirty years, so I actually grew up on the football field," a laughing Lewis related, adding, "The night I was born was a football Friday. My dad left the hospital to go and coach in a game. So I kind've got thrown into football. My dad and I have a good, little tradition, passin' the football before every Friday night game.

"So," Lewis continued, "I've grown up around sports, lookin' up to my older brother (Justin), who played basketball, and my dad takes me to the best coaches in the area. So my life really revolves around it, and I'm really proud of myself for it," Lewis concluded.
