As face masks become an ever-present part of our lives, there’s no reason to not make the most of it — namely, by finding ways to dress them up. Sure, a disposable mask or a basic cloth style does the trick, but why not get fancy? Better yet, why not accessorize your mask?
Face mask chains are trending on Instagram, and for good reason. The style has been popularized by influencers, fashionistas and celebs alike. Even politicians are getting in on the trend: Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez recently toured the headquarters of the brands that originated the trend, Second Wind, wearing the label’s now-iconic chain face mask.

While some masks have chains attached, others can just clip on to the ear loops. If you need to take the mask off, the chain keeps you from having to hold the mask (which might potentially contaminate it) or stuffing it in your bag.
As long as the chain doesn’t inhibit the function of your mask — which, if it clips in to the elastic ear loops, it won’t — it’s not doing you any harm. As always, make sure the mask is covering your nose and mouth, and that the chain isn’t so heavy that it weighs the mask down.
