'Use extreme caution.' Icy roads on Upper Cape lead to car crashes Wednesday morning

BOURNE - Icy conditions have caused traffic pileups and car crashes on Upper Cape roads Wednesday morning.

"If you are out traveling this morning, USE EXTREME CAUTION!!!" A Facebook post from Bourne's Department of Public Works read Wednesday. "The roads are very slippery and (there are) accidents everywhere on the highways!"

Police dispatchers in Bourne, Sandwich and Barnstable said their departments were responding to car crashes due to icy roads.

The ice comes two days ahead of the region's expected cold snap, when temperatures could drop to minus 3 degrees Friday, with wind chills at minus 20 degrees or lower. The National Weather Service has labeled the weekend weather "dangerously cold."

"Currently we’re dealing with a snow issue!" the post reads. "The timing of this is horrible, commute and school buses! All of our staff members are treating and scraping main roads for the buses and commuters."
