We're going back to the wonderful world of Oz. Black-ish creator Kenya Barris will be writing and directing Wizard of Oz, a "reimagining" of the classic 1939 film. Per Deadline, "We all know the story from the 1939 film, but Barris is keeping the creative details close to the vest. It will be a modern reimagining of the iconic musical."

No plot details have been released yet on the Wizard of Oz remake, however, the "modern reimagining" implies that the film could be set in present day. But it won't be the first interpretation of the now-classic story; Barris's Wizard of Oz film joins a long line of Oz reinterpretations and remakes.

The 1939 film itself was adapted from L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a children's book published in 1900. There have been numerous famous stage adaptations of the book, including The Wiz and Wicked. Other film adaptations of Baum's book include The Wiz, a 1978 musical film starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson and Oz the Great and Powerful, a 2013 film starring James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, and Rachel Weisz.

Plus, this is not the only Wizard of Oz remake currently in the works. Last year, New Line announced a version directed by Nicole Kassell based on the children's novel, not the film.

"I am incredibly honored to join Temple Hill and New Line in bringing this beloved classic to the screen," Kassell said in a statement at the time. "While the 1939 musical is part of my DNA, I am exhilarated and humbled by the responsibility of re-imagining such a legendary tale. The opportunity to examine the original themes —the quest for courage, love, wisdom and home — feels more timely and urgent than ever. These are profoundly iconic shoes to fill, and I am eager to dance alongside these heroes of my childhood as we pave a newly minted yellow brick road!"

It's unclear, however, if this film is still underway.
