Everything we know about how to watch Marvel’s ‘Echo’ on Disney+

Echo—the first deaf superhero to headline her own series, as well as the first Native American superhero in the Marvel cinematic universe—is getting her own show next year, and we’ve got all the details on how to watch.

The character of Maya Lopez, Echo’s alter-ego, played by deaf actress Alaqua Cox, first appeared on the Disney+ series Hawkeye in 2021, and in her brief stint on that show she proved to be one of the most intriguing heroes in the Marvel universe. Just this week, Disney confirmed that Echo, the Hawkeye spinoff starring Cox, has begun production in Atlanta. The show is expected to debut in 2023, and you'll be able to watch it on Disney+.

Where can you watch Echo?

You can stream Echo, as well as upcoming Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios titles, on Disney+. The streaming service is available via internet connection if you live in Australia, Austria, Canada, the Channel Islands, France, Germany, India, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or the U.S. Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform can be accessed from desktop browsers, mobile devices, game consoles and more.

What is Echo about?

Disney said new series, which will premiere on Disney+ in 2023, will explain Maya/Echo’s origin story. The series will co-star Zahn McClarnon, who also appeared in Hawkeye as Echo’s father William Lopez, as well as Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Cody Lightning and Graham Greene.

It’s hard to believe, but when Alaqua Cox made her impressive debut in Hawkeye as Echo, it was her very first on-screen role. On that show, she played the leader of a gang of toughs who worked for the villainous crime lord Kingpin, the man who helped raise her after the death of her biological father. That show gave us a brief glimpse at her back story, but Echo promises to go even deeper into Echo’s past, as she returns to her hometown to discover more about her Native American roots. (To that end, the show is taking great care to cast several Native actors in key roles, and by hiring Native and Aboriginal directors including Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie.)

One key question about Echo remains, however: will Kingpin appear in the series? While beloved Marvel actors do tend to reprise their roles in Marvel shows (i.e. Black Widow star Florence Pugh returning as Yelena Belova in Hawkeye), Vincent D’Onofrio, who has played Kingpin in both Hawkeye and Netflix’s Daredevil series, has not yet been confirmed as part of the cast, despite plenty of Internet rumors about his participation.

Though Maya/Echo appeared to be ruthless and skilled fighter throughout much of Hawkeye, Echo will provide even more information about just who Maya really is and how she came to be the mysterious hero named Echo.
