The Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding! And it’s set to include the beloved character Kamala Khan. Here’s everything we know about the Disney+ TV series Ms. Marvel so far.

Who is Ms. Marvel?

The name Ms. Marvel was the heroic name originally given to Carol Danvers when she first debuted in 1976. She held on to that identity for many years, only becoming Captain Marvel in 2012. When she finally earned her Captaincy, a new teenage character earned the Ms. moniker. Kamala Khan was a Pakistani American from Jersey City, New Jersey with shapeshifting powers that she inherited from her latent Inhuman DNA.

This will be the first superhero project that will feature a Muslim hero as the lead, as the series will focus on the Kamala Khan version of the character.

Ms. Marvel‘s Plot

Disney+ recently shared a first look at Ms. Marvel on their platform. This glimpse at the series showcased Kamala Khan and touched on her desire to be a superhero. Marvel also shared in a release:

Ms. Marvel introduces Kamala Khan—a 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City. An aspiring artist, an avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she is a huge fan of the Avengers—and one in particular, Captain Marvel. But Kamala has always struggled to find her place in the world—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. The series is directed by executive producers Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with executive producer Bisha K. Ali serving as head writer. “Ms. Marvel” premieres on Disney+ in Summer 2022.

Who will play Ms. Marvel?

Iman Vellani will play Kamal Khan, according to a report in Deadline. Just as in the comics, Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey who discovers her Inhuman powers, and decides to become a superhero. Fans will also get to see Vellani in Captain Marvel 2, which she’ll star in alongside Brie Larson.

The cast also includes Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Naki, Azher Usman, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha. Laurel Mardsen will reportedly play Zoe Zimmer, one of Kamala’s classmates at Coles Academic High School.

We got our first behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming show—including new footage—at the Disney shareholders meeting event in December 2020.

When does the show come out?

Ms. Marvel doesn’t have an exact release date yet. It was scheduled to debut in late 2021 on Disney+. However, as we first saw reported by Variety, Nerdist has confirmed it will now release in 2022. Most recently, in news we saw on Comic Book, Disney shared on an investor call that Ms. Marvel is set to debut in the second half of 2022. Likely, Ms. Marvel will release somewhere around the summer, between July and September.

On May 11, 2021, Variety reported production had wrapped. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the original production in Georgia had to move to Thailand. Despite a third wave of infections in the country, the Thai government allowed Ms. Marvel to continue. So while we don’t have a firm release date, we know it’s at least finished.

What happens after?

Following Ms. Marvel, Vellani will reprise her role as Kamala Khan in the 2022 feature film The Marvels, a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel and a follow-up to Ms. Marvel.
