ALEX SMITH: I think I'm so used to my body responding how I want it to respond. I had high expectations for this process that I could knock it out of the park. And I think I had to slow that a little bit.

- All right. You ready to get after it?

ALEX SMITH: Yep.

- All right. Let's come on up.

- But Alex has always had complete control over one aspect of his recovery.

- The most impressive thing with Alex, from day one, has been his outlook. I've never seen him in a bad mood. I've seen him get frustrated with certain exercises, but that lasts a couple of seconds, and then he's-- he just picks it up, and he says, all right. I gotta figure this out. And he'll just-- he'll find it.

- It doesn't seem too bad today.

- But healing takes time, especially after 16 surgeries in 8 months.

- The scars. Don't know where to start.

ALEX SMITH: OK. Well, this guy is where they took a part of my quad, the vastus lateralis. And that's what is down here. So you see my-- that's skin from my thigh right there. And this bulk is that muscle. The rest of these guys are skin grafts which come in like this.
