Erie Police Department investigates attempted ATM burglary at Walgreens

Sep. 28—The Erie Police Department is investigating a Wednesday morning attempted burglary at Walgreens.

About 3 a.m. Wednesday, Officer Cody Powers noticed vehicle headlights in the Walgreens parking lot at Erie Parkway and County Line Road, according to a Erie police news release. After arriving on scene, the suspects fled in trucks and eluded officers southbound on County Line Road and then eastbound on Colo. 7.

Surveillance footage later reviewed by law enforcement captured two trucks, one red Ford and one blue Chevy, arriving at the Walgreens at 2:42 a.m. About 2:50 a.m., the suspects broke a window, entered the store and hoisted a chain around an ATM. Because of Powers' arrival on scene, the suspects were unable to steal the ATM or anything from inside the store.

At 3 a.m., the alarm company for Walgreens notified dispatch of the glass break, the news release said.

Erie police, the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Taskforce and law enforcement from surrounding jurisdictions responded to the scene to collect evidence, the release said.

"This is an ongoing metro-wide theft ring that necessitates a coordinated law enforcement effort to identify the suspects," said Erie Police Chief Kim Stewart in the news release. "Officer Powers was in the right place at the right time."

No further information was immediately available Wednesday afternoon.
