England vs Wales player ratings: Rashford and Foden star, but which Welsh player scores 4/10?

Marcus Rashford's brilliant double helped England reach the knockout phase as group winners and brought Wales' first World Cup appearance since 1958 to an end.

They was the first game between the sides at a World Cup and England brushed their rivals aside to set up a last-16 meeting with Senegal and send Robert Page's side packing.

But who starred and who struggled in the Battle of Britain? We have scored the players from both sides – and you can let us know your view too using our new ratings tool.

England

Jordan Pickford

Dived across his goal once when a Moore shot was deflected wide, but otherwise England’s goalkeeper had a far too comfortable night for the liking of the Wales players and their fans. Two successive clean sheets will give Pickford and his defenders plenty of confidence heading into the knockout stage of the tournament. 6/10

Kyle Walker

Made his first appearance for club or country since October 2, as Southgate decided to give the Manchester City defender some vital minutes. Understandably, he was not at his very best but he did produce a super move with Bellingham that created a chance for Foden. The fact he lasted 57 minutes before being replaced by Alexander-Arnold will be a big boost to his manager. 6

John Stones

Wales offered virtually nothing in an attacking sense, which made life pretty easy for Stones and his fellow defenders. But, just as it was at the last World Cup and the Euros, the Manchester City man is clearly enjoying playing next to Maguire and he looked confident and calm in everything he did. Missed a sitter at the end. 6

Harry Maguire

Once again heard his name sung by the England fans in Doha, but struggled to make his normal impact from set-pieces with Wales putting man mountain Moore on him. Southgate has been delighted with the way Maguire has used the ball from the back at the World Cup, but he looked inside a little too often against Wales. 6

Luke Shaw

England’s left-back took greater responsibility on England’s set pieces with Kieran Trippier on the substitutes’ bench, but his delivery from free-kicks could have been better. Shaw could also have overlapped his Manchester United team-mate Rashford more regularly in the first half when the pair were both operating on the left. Shaw did not put a foot wrong defensively. 6

Jordan Henderson

The Liverpool man was brought in to provide experience and extra legs to England’s midfield, which he did. There were a few too many misplaced passes in the first half, but he, like the rest of the team, improved after the break and Southgate has a big decision to make for the last-16 clash against Senegal in terms of his midfielders. Almost sent Wilson in on goal. 7

Declan Rice

A bit like Pickford and Kane, Rice has made himself one of the England players Southgate counts on, but he was given a rest when the West Ham United midfielder was replaced by Phillips for the final 32 minutes. Rice was probably his team’s best performer in a drab first-half, before England sprung to life. 7

Jude Bellingham

Started in a slightly more advanced role with less responsibility to defend than in the previous two games. The teenager combined brilliantly with Walker to create a chance for Foden, which the Manchester City man fired over the bar. Might have scored when he was picked out by substitute Wilson late on. 6

Phil Foden

The man the public wanted delivered for Southgate and will surely now keep his place. There were a couple of flashes in the first half, but it was after being switched to the left at half-time that Foden really came alive. He won the free-kick with a brilliant run from which Rashford scored and then doubled England’s lead himself. A night to remember for Foden. 8

Harry Kane

The England captain showed his creative side early on by sending through Rashford. Ward saved that time, but the Wales keeper could not do anything when Kane produced a perfect low cross to pick out Foden at the back post to effectively kill the game for England and seal top spot in Group B. Given a rest for the final 33 minutes when he was replaced by Wilson. 7

Marcus Rashford

Rashford had said that his favourite position is off the left and yet he was switched to the right for the second half and scored a brilliant free-kick five minutes after the restart. Just a couple of moments later he pressured Davies into the mistake that led to England’s second and later netted England’s third. Maybe the right side is his best position. 8

Substitutes:

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6 (for Walker, 57): The Liverpool man might have feared he might not play a single minute at this World Cup, so he would have been delighted to get on.

Callum Wilson 7 (for Kane, 57): Being deputy to Kane is particularly unenviable, but Wilson got over half-an-hour and created a chance for Bellingham.

Kalvin Phillips 7 (for Rice, 58): Like Walker, the chance to give Phillips minutes will have been a big plus for Southgate and it was from his pass that Rashford scored his second.

Kieran Trippier 6 (for Shaw, 66): Trippier’s versatility is key for Southgate and let him give his only out-and-out left-back a much-needed rest.

Jack Grealish 6 (for Rashford, 76): Made an appearance as a substitute for the third successive game and it’s a role Southgate must think suits him.

Wales

Danny Ward

Might have done better with Rashford's free-kick and certainly will not want to see Man Utd striker’s second again, which squirmed through him terribly. 4/10

Neco Williams

Took a direct hit to the front of his head by a hard Rashford shot and was forced off with suspected concussion after attempting to play on. 6

Chris Mepham

Slipped to allow Rashford best chance in opening stages and generally looked vulnerable to pace. Appeared increasingly uncomfortable as game progressed. 5

Joe Rodon

Gave away free kick on edge of box which Rashford scored from, was then well beaten by Kane as he teed up England’s second. 5

Ben Davies

Robbed when dallying shortly after England opener. Moments later they would be two up. Nearly atoned with cross which had Pickford sprawling. Subbed soon after. 5

Ethan Ampadu

Keen to begin with, contributing on and off the ball, but faded from game to the point or irrelevance. Went to right-back after introduction of Morrell. 5

Joe Allen

Busy in the middle but one pass straight to Henderson when under no pressure was poor. Felt like Wales’ night would have been even worse without him. 7

Gareth Bale

If this was his final Wales cap it was a sad way to bow out. Two wayward passes in opening 10 minutes, one decent trick to beat Maguire, but little else. 5

Aaron Ramsey

Hassled and harried from the middle, did more than most to disturb England’s serene spells of possession. Booked for late kick on Henderson. 6

Daniel James

Struggled to have any meaningful impact on the game, although did go close shortly after England’s second. Booked for late tackle on Stones. 5

Kieffer Moore

Notably ungainly and clumsy in first half, rarely a recipe for international glory. Long-range deflected shot nearly beat Pickford and tried hard otherwise. 6

Substitutes

Connor Roberts (on for Williams, 36) rose to occasion. Brennan Johnson (Bale, 46) livened up right-hand side, Joe Morrell looked vulnerable (B Davies, 59). Little time for Harry Wilson (James 77) or Rubin Colwill (Allen 81)
