England vs Senegal, World Cup 2022 last 16: Date, kick-off time and TV channel

Gareth Southgate's England have reached the knockouts of the 2022 Qatar World Cup following victory over Wales in their final group game.

That result meant they topped Group B, and set up a last-16 meeting with Group A runners-up Senegal.

Despite carrying a knock, Harry Kane remains confident he can challenge for the Golden Boot and will hope he can shake off any injury concerns ahead of Sunday's meeting with Senegal.

England captain Kane went for a scan on his foot after a heavy challenge from Iran’s Morteza Pouraliganji in the Group B opener last week, and has since had strapping around his ankle.

But after being able to carry on playing against Iran, the 29-year-old started against USA and played for almost an hour in the win over Wales before Southgate made changes to rest legs.

“I've definitely played with worse stuff throughout my career,” said Kane to the BBC. “In the Iran game I could have easily played the full 90 minutes, I think the manager changed it for tactical reasons. I had a precautionary scan which is really common in our sport, came back pretty much all clear and I was good to go.

“I know the hype and the noise that can come around with injury. But to be honest the team isn’t just me, we have 26 players here who are all looking to achieve the same thing, to win the World Cup.”

Kane, who is within sight of Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring record for England, is yet to score in Qatar, with his team’s nine goals coming from elsewhere and Marcus Rashford putting himself among the Golden Boot contenders after scoring three times.

After failing to score in the group stages of the Euros last year, Kane ended up with four goals in the knockout stages, with goals against Germany, Ukraine and Denmark as England made it to the final.

“I want to score in every game and the Euros was no different,” he added. “I wanted to score in the group games, it didn't come until the Round of 16 against Germany. This tournament is no different.”

How have Senegal fared so far?

Disaster struck for Senegal before the World Cup even started, with talismanic forward Sadio Mané ruled out of the tournament after picking up an injury while playing for Bayern Munich. But the Africa Cup of Nations champions managed to progress from the group stage regardless, winning two and losing one of their three games.

They were unlucky in their first match against the Netherlands, holding out for more than 80 minutes before two late goals clinched the win for the Dutch.

Senegal survived a scare in their second game against hosts Qatar. After taking a two-goal lead, the hosts threatened to cause a shock by pulling one back on 78 minutes. But Senegal replied six minutes later to put the game to bed.

Senegal were resilient in their final group game against Ecuador. They took the lead through an Ismaila Sarr penalty, but were pegged back by a Moises Caicedo goal. As they did against Qatar, Senegal replied quickly, with a clinical volley from Kalidou Koulibaly winning the match and securing their last-16 place.

El Hadji Diouf played against England’s “Golden Generation” and believes a lack of team spirit held them back, claiming Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard did not get on as friends.

Senegal’s World Cup hero from 2002 is back at the tournament two decades later. As advisor to his country’s football federation, he is on the pitches at Al-Duhail SC’s training facilities, helping with sessions as his country prepares to face Southgate’s team on Sunday.

He hopes it goes to penalties, as they qualified for Qatar and also became African Cup of Nations champions after shootouts. “If we get to penalties, we’re going to win it. Easy,” he says. And Diouf is also wary of an England team who is very different from the one in the mid-2000s when they had the Premier League’s biggest stars but never reached the latter stages.

“This time of English football is different because they all copy Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, they play the same way and want to have the ball and score a lot of goals and play tiki-taka football,” he said.

“Players can do it as well, they have a good team and a very good team spirit as well, not like Steven Gerrard and Lampard’s time – the two of them, they don’t like each other, it’s now about team spirit and Gareth Southgate did a great job.”

As he plays keepy-up with Senegal’s players, Diouf has not lost his touch. There is a hint of the player he was at the Korea/Japan World Cup in 2002 when he reached the quarter-finals and moved to Liverpool. Spells at Bolton, Sunderland, Blackburn, Rangers, Doncaster and Leeds followed.

“Last night I was talking to Sam [Allardyce, former Bolton manager] and everyone knows Sam is a part of my family,” he said. “And Neil Warnock, the two great managers I know in England. I love them and I would love to invite them to watch this game as well. Sam can’t come, because he has to go to Phuket with his wife, but Neil is going to try.”

Should Warnock fly over, he could see something of a World Cup shock if Senegal manage to defeat England.

“I never say Senegal can’t win, it reminds me of when I played against France, they won the tournament before, and I think England now they are doing the same thing, this is good for us, we don’t have anything to show the world,” he said.

“If you see our squad, we have Edouard Mendy, we have [Kalidou] Koulibaly, we have a lot of good players playing in England, some play in the Championship, but they are really Premier League players, like Ismaila Sarr. It’s for them to show how good they are in this game.

“When some teams play against African team they talk about luck, and about concentration of Africans, that sometimes they’re not good enough or whatever, but what they see at this World Cup, Tunisia beat France, Morocco taking the lead right now, Senegal doing very well and showing our character.”

How have England got on so far?

England's World Cup started in convincing fashion, with their 6-2 win over Iran gaining plenty of plaudits. A goalless draw followed against USA, putting the brakes on the English excitement levels somewhat.

Another 45 minutes passed against Wales with England unable to find the net before two quick-fire goals from Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden after the break turned the game in their favour.

Wales needed victory to keep their own World Cup dreams alive but Rashford scored his second and England were able to see the game out to book their spot in the knockout stages.

This is only Senegal’s third World Cup. At their debut tournament in 2002, they famously upset holders France on the way to the quarter-finals, where they were beaten by Turkey in extra-time.
