England vs USA: When is Wembley match and where to watch on TV

England captain Leah Williamson is out of Friday’s hotly-anticipated meeting with the world champions the United States at Wembley through injury, along with youngster Lucy Parker who has been forced to withdraw from Sarina Wiegman's squad.

Williamson's fellow Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy and Manchester United forward Nikita Parris have been called up as replacements, ahead of Friday's friendly at a sold-out Wembley and next Tuesday's visit of the Czech Republic in Brighton.

It is understood that Williamson, who led the Lionesses to Euro 2021 glory with their first major international trophy in July, picked up her as-yet unspecified injury during training, and she will now undergo further assessment.

Parker, who had been called up to the senior side for the first time this month, has returned to her club West Ham United to continue her rehabilitation having been injured in the East London side's League Cup group-stage meeting with London City Lionesses on Sunday, which West Ham won 10-9 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. "Football can be cruel, and this feeling will take some time to process," Parker wrote on Twitter. "Heartbroken doesn’t cover it. Another obstacle to overcome, but I will be back stronger once again."

Wubben-Moy and Parris were both members of July's triumphant Euros squad. Nonetheless, Williamson's absence will be a major blow to Wiegman's team's hopes against the world's number-one-ranked side the USA, with the European champions having already lost central striker Alessia Russo to a knock earlier this week. Vice-captain Millie Bright is poised to wear the armband instead, although that has not yet been confirmed.

The game comes as England step up their preparations for next summer's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and will see England meet USA for the first time since the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, when the Lionesses lost 2-0. USA also won 2-1 when the two sides met in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup in Lyon.

Friday's game at the home of English football sold out within hours of going on sale in August and is the back-to-back World Cup winners' first visit to Wembley since their victory in the gold medal match at the 2012 Olympic Games, against Japan.

Megan Rapinoe says the United States are "emotionally exhausted" ahead of facing England at Wembley on Friday at the end of a week which saw the publication of a report into an extensive abuse scandal in the US women's game.

On Monday a year-long investigation by former US Attorney General Sally Yates was released and outlined "systemic" abuse in the NWSL and published evidence that showed whistleblowers' evidence was ignored for multiple years.

Former Ballon d'Or winner Rapinoe described the report as "horrifying" to read, adding: "I can't even imagine [what it must be like] for the players most affected, the names that we know and probably a lot of the names that we don't know.

"It can definitely be re-triggering or re-traumatising just to have to deal with that on such an incredible occasion to be here at Wembley and be able to participate in this game, which is so exciting, that juxtaposition is just ridiculous.

"Nobody ever wants to see anything like [abuse] this but hopefully this can be a moment in time that you say, none of this ever happens again."

However, OL Reign winger Rapinoe, 37, pointed out that she and her team-mates – who fought at length for equal pay settlement – are no strangers to adversity, and when asked if they were emotionally exhausted, continued: "We are [but] we have an incredible ability to shoulder so much.

"It's really sad to say, but in a way, we're used to having to deal with one thing or another. It seems to bring us closer and definitely unify the team.

"This [game at Wembley] is an incredible game and moment, that actually, I think, sits kind of nicely with this horrific thing - a sell out, 90,000 plus at Wembley, another team who are having an incredible run, this [match] is a special moment for us all come together and celebrate women's football for all the good that it is."
