Dec. 6—HARTFORD — An Enfield resident was killed Monday morning in a seven-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 involving three tractor-trailers, a city bus, and three cars.

Gary Carter, 59, of Enfield was driving a tractor-trailer in the right center lane of I-84 westbound just before Exit 44 in Hartford. According to state police, Carter was unable to stop his vehicle for an unknown reason and collided with the rear end of a city bus stopped in traffic in the right center lane.

State police said this caused Carter's vehicle to run into the passenger side of a FedEx tractor-trailer, which was directly in front of the city bus. The FedEx truck then hit the rear end of a Honda stopped directly in front of it.

The impact from Carter's vehicle caused the bus to travel into the left center lane, where it hit the rear end of a Jeep and a U.S. Postal Service tractor-trailer, state police said. This caused the Jeep to travel into the left lane, colliding with the rear end of a Toyota Rav4.

Pablo Ruiz of East Hartford, the driver of the Toyota, and Kristen Spearin of Chaplin, the driver of the Jeep, made no complaints of injury and refused medical treatment.

The other people involved — Cedric Tobias of Windsor, Andrene and Anthony Richards of Waterbury, Kyron Smith of Orange, New Jersey, and Gregory Mahoney of Vernon — all were transported to Hartford Hospital with suspected minor injuries.

Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police said the incident is still under investigation.
