Weiss swam to a a four-year sweep of state titles in the 100-yard breaststroke while at Yorktown High School and set a national record in 2018. She won a gold medal in the 50-meter breaststroke in the under-18 World Junior Championships at Indianapolis in 2017.

She made her announcement on Instagram.

“With the help from the medical staff here at IU, I have made the decision to medically retire,” she posted. “I cannot thank everyone enough for the immense amount of support and love I have gotten throughout the years. I would not trade all my years of swimming for anything in the world.

“This sport has taught me so much and has put such amazing people in my life. I have so much to be grateful for. With that being said, I am ready to start a new journey.”

Weiss, a junior at IU, never swam as fast in college as she did in high school. As a sophomore, she broke King’s state record in the 100-yard breaststroke, and then she lowered that to 58.40 seconds the next year.
