Emily Ratajkowski has announced that she and husband Sebastian Bear-McClard are pregnant with their first child.
In a candid essay on gender for Vogue, she revealed that they will try to raise their child with as few gender stereotypes as possible and that they "won't know the gender until our child is 18 and that they'll let us know then."
Emily Ratajkowski and her husband Sebastian Bear-McClard have announced that they are expecting their first child together, with Ratajkowski speaking candidly about the pregnancy in an essay in Vogue about gender and being a parent.
Speaking about sharing the news with friends, Ratajkowski said that she and producer husband Bear-McClard are always met with the same question about the baby's sex.
"When my husband and I tell friends that I’m pregnant, their first question after 'Congratulations' is almost always 'Do you know what you want?' We like to respond that we won’t know the gender until our child is 18 and that they’ll let us know then," she writes, adding that the couple is much more interested in "who—rather than what—is growing inside my belly. Who will this person be? What kind of person will we become parents to? How will they change our lives and who we are?"
Elsewhere in the essay she speaks about the loneliness of pregnancy, saying, "My husband likes to say that 'we’re pregnant.' I tell him that while the sentiment is sweet, it’s not entirely true. I resent that his entire family’s DNA is inside of me but that my DNA is not inside him... My husband has no physical symptoms in "our" pregnancy, another reminder of how different a woman and man’s experience of life can be."
She ends with this sweet sentiment about her growing child, "I’m completely and undeniably helpless when it comes to almost everything surrounding my pregnancy: how my body will change, who my child will be. But I’m surprisingly unbothered. Instead of feeling afraid, I feel a new sense of peace. I’m already learning from this person inside my body. I’m full of wonder."
