Elon Musk Claims He Is First Person With Asperger's To Host 'SNL'
Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk ran “human in emulation mode” pretty convincingly — as he promised in his monologue — on “Saturday Night Live” in his debut appearance, claiming to be the “first person with Asperger’s” ever to host the program.
Musk was arrogant, quirky and funny, saying he doesn’t think he’s so bad, and that he has a great vision for the future. “I believe in a renewable energy future,” he said. “I believe that humanity must become an interplanetary space-faring civilization. Those seem like exciting goals, don’t they?”
If “I just posted that on Twitter, I’d be fine. But I also write things like, ’69 days after 4/20, again, haha,’” he said. “I thought it was funny. That’s why I wrote ‘haha’ at the end.”
So maybe he’s not cool, he confessed.
“To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say, I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship,” he said. “Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?”
He teased that he could really surprise people because the show was live — and was streamed live on YouTube around the world for the first time ever.
“I could say something truly shocking, like: I drive a Prius,” he said.
As for Musk’s claim that he’s the first person with Asperger’s to host “SNL,” original cast member Dan Aykroyd, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s in the 1980s, returned to host the show back in 2003.
Colin Jost later joked on “Weekend Update” that Musk hosted the show so he’d have an alibi when the Chinese rocket crashed into the Indian Ocean on Saturday night.
Musk also appeared on the faux news segment as a financial expert talking up Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that Musk’s mother, Maye, promoted earlier in the show. “Weekend Update” host Michael Che repeatedly asked, “What is Dogecoin?”
Musk eventually admitted that “it’s a hustle” — and Dogecoin’s value plunged to as low as $0.47 on crypto exchange Binance, down 28% from about $0.65 before the show.
The show opened by softening up the audience with a heartfelt tribute to moms for Mother’s Day. As musical guest Miley Cyrus belted out a soulful “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” written by her godmother Dolly Parton, cast members warmly greeted their moms.
“It’s been a long dark night,” Cyrus sang. “And I’ve been a waitin’ for the morning ... And everything’s gonna be all right, that’s been all wrong.”
