Elco grad Lawrence returning to top form after injury

Colton Lawrence scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Bentley (Mass) men’s basketball team to an 89-79 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Saint Anselm on Nov. 17. He came back with nine points in 11 minutes before suffering an injury on his heel (Plantar fasciitis).

The 6-foot-3 graduate student from Myerstown and an ELCO graduate missed the next seven weeks, but he came back with a flourish when he had 19 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench in an 80-78 league triumph over New Haven on Jan. 11. He followed that up with 10 points and four assists in an 85-73 league victory over Pace last Saturday.

Despite the layoff, Lawrence still leads the Falcons with a 17.8 average and he has connected on 15 of 28 3-point attempts (53.5 percent). He is also averaging 4.6 rebounds a game.

Lawrence was also sidelined due to injury in 20-19-20 and the team didn’t compete last season because of the pandemic. In 52 games from 201702019, he averaged 10.1 points and 4.8 rebounds. He had 525 points, 249 rebounds and had 78 3-pointers.

Bentley is 11-3 overall and is second in the Northeast-10 Northern Division with a 6-2 record.

Krista Weik (Cedar Crest)

The junior and the St. Francis women’s swim team is still hoping to get into action this semester after two meets were postponed last week. The Red Flash closed the first half by finishing second out of five teams in the Central Connecticut Invitational on Dec. 3 and Weik had an outstanding meet. She finished first in the 200 IM (2:08.62) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.75). She also finished second in the 100 IM (1:09.43) and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.03) and helped the 400 medley relay finish second (3:54.34).

De’Azia Holloman (Cedar Crest)

The junior and junior Hannah Woelfling, her former teammate at Cedar Crest, had strong showings for the Millersville women’s indoor track team at the Coach I Open last Saturday in Lancaster. Holloman finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9:56 and was sixth in the 60-meter dash in 8.33. Woelfling finished second in the shot put with a heave of 42 feet and was second in the weight throw with a toss of 52-feet, 11 ½-inches.

Gage Krall (Northern Lebanon)

The sophomore made his first start of the season and it was a winning one for the Lock Haven men’s track team. Krall captured the 5,000-meter run at the Susquehanna Muli and Invitational last weekend in Selinsgrove with a time of 15:44.50. In his previous start, he finished 15th in the 10,000-meter run at the Division II NCAA Atlantic Regional with a time of 31:44.3 on Nov. 6, 2021. It was the first time he competed at that distance in his career with the Bald Eagles.

Adam Loehr (Cedar Crest)

The junior is a versatile performer for the Alvenia men’s indoor track team. He finished third in the high jump with a personal record height of 6-feet, ¾-inches in the Coach I Open last Saturday in Lancaster. He also finished ninth in the shot put (36-feet, 4-inches) and 20th in the 60-meter dash (7.75). Loehr kicked off the indoor season at the Golden Wolves Rust Buster on Dec. 4. He finished first in the pole vault (10-feet, 11 ¾-inches), second in the 60 hurdles (9.08) and sixth in the shot put (32-feet, 10 ½-inches).

Stephen Lyons (Palmyra)

The sophomore had another solid performance for the Ursinus men’s swim team in a 126-8 victory over Cabrini to open the second semester last Friday in Collegeville. Lyons captured the 200 IM in 2:05.35 and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay which touched the wall in 1:41.98. He also finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.15. The Bears are also getting points from two other former Palmyra grads – sophomore Daniel Leach and freshman Jake Klucinec.

Jake Barrett (Cedar Crest)

The Stevenson junior kicked off the second semester by finishing fourth out of 13 runners in the mile at the Kaye & Scott Invitational indoor track meet on Jan. 9 in Winchester, Va. He finished behind three Eastern Nazarene runners with a time of 4:47.67. It was the first mile of his college career. Barrett finished 16th out of 29 runners in the 800-meter run at Susquehanna’s Muti and Invitational last weekend in Selinsgrove. His time was 2:14.05.

Jordan Seyfert (Annville-Cleona)

The 5-foot-10, 179-pound forward has two goals and two assists for the Merrimack men’s hockey team, the Warriors 10-10-1 overall and 5-7 in Hockey East after topping No. 17-ranked Providence 3-2 and 2-1 last weekend. Seyfert had a goal in a 7-1 non-league game over Brown on Jan. 2. His first goal of the season came in a 3-2 non-league loss to Union on Nov. 27. Prior to going to Merrimack, he played junior hockey for both Chicago and Fargo in the United States Hockey League.

Katelyn Becker (Palmyra)

The 5-foot-9 freshman guard/forward has played in all 11 games and started 10 for the Swarthmore women’s basketball team, the Garnet 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial Conference after dropping a 56-46 league decision at Gettysburg last Saturday. Becker, who had five points in the game, is averaging 26 minutes of action. She is averaging 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds a game with 16 assists, 16 steals and three blocked shots.

Shayla Bonzelet (Cedar Crest)

The sophomore is a key middle sprint performer for the Army women’s indoor track team. She finished 10th out of 27 sprinters in the 400-meter dash at the Virginia Tech Invitational last weekend in Blacksburg. Her time was 1:01.06. Bonzelet also competed in the 500-meter dash and finished 18th with a time of 1:23.00. Her career best time in the 400 is 55.56 while her top career time in the 500 is 1:15.33.

Elijah Herb (ELCO)

The junior wrapped up the first semester with a solid effort for the Lancaster Bible men’s track team. At the Bow Tie Invitational on Dec. 10 in Collegeville. He finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.94 after posting a personal best of 8.81 to finish second in the preliminaries. The versatile Herb also finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 36-feet, 11 ¾-inches and was seventh in the long jump with an 18-foot, 7 ¼-inch effort.
