El Paso hockey team donates $10K to community foundation after mass shooting

The El Paso Rhinos of the Western States Hockey League will donate $10,000 to a community foundation, following a mass shooting on Aug. 3, which killed 22 people.

The team is also planning to raise additional funds for the El Paso Community Foundation from a jersey auction, which will be held during El Paso’s two exhibition games against Mexico’s U-20 national team on Sept. 28-29. The vast majority of the initial $10,000 sum will be raised from the Rhinos’ ticket sales.

The exhibitions were scheduled prior to the shooting.

"It's a pretty sad time in El Paso," Rhinos coach Cory Herman said via NHL.com’s William Douglas. "Everybody is in shock right now. You just can't believe it happened. It's very, very sad. We wanted to do something to help."

“There were people from Mexico who died that day too. This is a loving city; well, it's really the biggest small town you'll ever visit. This is the type of place that if you're broken down along side of the road, within a couple of minutes you have people stopping trying to help you. People are just in shock right now.”

The Rhinos won back-to-back Western States Hockey League championships and are aiming to three-peat in 2019-20.
