El Paso County recorded 26 COVID-19 deaths, 13,786 infections last week

COVID-19 continues to take a toll on El Paso, with 26 new deaths reported last week.

The death toll in El Paso since the pandemic began stood at 3,158 people Monday.

City officials said 65% of the deaths reported last week, which occurred over the span of two months, were among people who were not fully vaccinated.

One occurred in December and 25 in January. All had underlying health conditions.

The deceased were two men in their 30s, two men and one woman in their 40s, three men and two women in their 50s, four men and one woman in their 60s, two men and two women in their 70s, four men and two women in their 80s and one woman in her 90s.

City officials said medical professionals were needed to determine if the deaths were COVID-19 related.

Nine of the deaths were breakthrough COVID-19 cases, meaning the patients had been vaccinated. The total number of breakthrough deaths is 111.

Another 6,862 new breakthrough COVID-19 cases were reported last week.

There also were 13,786 new COVID-19 cases reported last week, as well as 1,602 additional cases that were part of the delayed local results issued by the state to the city of El Paso’s Department of Public Health.

Health officials said 28,326 COVID-19 cases were reported to be active at the end of last week.

On Monday, 1,340 more COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the total to 211,188. No new deaths were reported. Officials said there were 29,358 active cases, with 178,489 people having recovered. On Monday, 521 were hospitalized, including 141 in intensive care and 93 on ventilators.

As of Monday, there were 27,468 breakthrough cases reported, including 761 that required hospitalization, with 179 patients being placed in ICU and 76 on ventilators. Officials said there have been 111 breakthrough deaths.

Health officials urge continued vaccinations, social distancing and frequent hand-washing.
