Education Notebook: COVID Update, relief drive

Aug. 7—Madison County Schools have revealed their plans for dealing with COVID-19 this school year.

Madison County Public Schools will return to classes on a regular schedule. Masks will be optional for any students, staff, or visitors to the building. The school system will monitor local and state health departments and the CDC regarding the virus.

Any changes of the school districts COVID-19 plans will be communicated to the students, staff, the families of both, and the community at large.

They are continuing to encourage students, staff, and the families of both to be cautious, practice good hygiene, and use a mask if they think it best.

Face masks will be optional for students at Model Laboratory schools this year. The school will have free masks and rapid COVID tests available for students as needed. They are encouraging students to stay home if they are sick or feverish.

If a student at Model tests positive, they are asked to notify Kim Puckett at Kim.puckett@eku.edu.

Free meal program to continue at Madison County Public Schools

Madison County Schools will continue to qualify for the community eligibility program into the 2022-2023 school year, meaning all students will still get free meals at school.

"Madison County Schools is very fortunate to continue to be able to provide free meals to all students through the CEP program. We know this is of great benefit to many of our families and we are excited to continue the program again this year," Madison County Schools Community Education Director Erin Stewart said in a statement to the Register.

Flood Relief Drive

As part of a collaboration with Madison County Schools and the Madison County Educators Association (MCEA), all back to school nights in the county will be accepting donations for victims of flooding in eastern Kentucky.

Accepted items include:

jugs of water

trash bags

can openers

neosporin

bandaids

bug spray

wash clothes

towels

anti-fungal medication

Advil/Tylenol for adults and children

shovels

buckets

hand sanitizer

cleaning wipes

paper towels
