Education notebook: ACU debate team second in nation

The Abilene Christian University debate team ended its 2021-22 season ranked second overall in the nation, ACU announced in a news release.

The ranking came afer the team's third-place finish at the International Public Debate Association National Championship Tournament in April 8-11 on campus.

Of more than 170 colleges and universities participating in the IPDA, the release said, ACU won first place in both the JV and Professional divisions, and also took first place in team debating.

According to the release, the ACU team won more than 100 individual debate and speaker awards and 22 sweepstakes over the course of the season, including a first-place overall finish for ACU graduate student Ethan Arbuckle in the Professional division.

Arbuckle also won third place speaker in the Professional division.

Tarleton sets $125 million fundraising goal

Tarleton State University announced in a recent news release a revised goal of $125 million in its capital campaign after reaching the campaign's initial goal more than two years ahead of target.

The campaign, "Forward, Together: Investing in Today’s Students for Future Success," was initially announced in at the school's annual gala in 2020, with a goal of raising $100 million by the school's 125th anniversary in September 2024. However, the release said, that goal was met by the time of the gala in 2022, with donations from more than 11,000 benefactors.

"We are blessed to have such visionary supporters," Tarleton President James Hurley said in the release. "But more impressive than the dollars is the impact. I am excited to take the next steps as we build on this momentum."

High school seniors commit to attending TSTC

As part of National CTE Signing Day on April 14, 21 high school seniors committed to attending Texas State Technical College in West Texas at a ceremony at TSTC’s Abilene campus, the school said in a news release.

The event, which was celebrated at each of TSTC’s 10 campuses across the state, recognizes future career and technical education students in a way often reserved for athletics.

TSTC scholarships of $1,000 were awarded to three students attending the Abilene event: Kenton Perryman of Eula High School, and Aiden McHan and Bristol Poindexter, both of Clyde High School.

Perryman also was awarded a 3M Industries Industrial Systems scholarship.
