Edison finishes with nine sectional champions

Feb. 28—PLYMOUTH — State-ranked Edison finished with nine individual champions and three other finalists across the 14 weight classes to dominate Saturday's Division III sectional championships hosted by Plymouth High School.

The Chargers — ranked No. 2 in the Feb. 10 borofanohio.net rankings — totaled an impressive 316.5 points. Firelands Conference co-champions Plymouth (155.5) and Crestview (153) were again neck-and-neck in second and third place.

Monroeville (146) was fourth, followed by Mohawk (139.5) in fifth and St. Paul (107) in seventh.

Plymouth advanced nine to next week's district at Rossford, while Monroeville is sending six, St. Paul advanced five, while New London, Willard and South Central each moved on one wrestler.

The top four placers in each weight class advance in each sectional, while the top four placers at next week's district will qualify for the state championships.

Individual champions for the Chargers included Max Hermes at 106 pounds, Marcus Medina (120), Kohen Horvath (132), Casey Barnett (138), Duke Hermes (145), Shadrick Slone (160), Remington Bauer (170), Logan Lloyd (182) and Gavyn Klima (195).

Finishing second for Edison included Jared Fantuzzi (113), Jacob Thompson (220) and Jackson Berardi (285). Garrett Scott was third at 152 to make it 13 Chargers advancing to Rossford next week.

Hermes had two pins (1:31, 1:45) and a 17-6 major decision over Nathan Parks (Seneca East) in the finals. Medina had a pin (2:52) and an 18-3 technical fall to reach the final, where he beat St. Paul's Harley Stoll in 2:15.

Horvath used pins in 1:15 and 1:41 before topping Monroeville's Hunter Vogus in a 1-0 thriller. He then pinned Mohawk's Jace Margraf in 4:44 in the finals.

Barnett used three pins in 1:32, 1:19, and 2:23 over Mohawk's Owen England in the finals, while Duke Hermes had a pin (1:35), a 4-2 decision, then another 6-4 decision over St. Paul's Will Stieber in the final.

Slone was barely on the mat at 160 for the Chargers, as he pinned four opponents in 10 seconds, 40 seconds, 43 seconds and 45 seconds over Crestview's Connor Morse in the finals.

Bauer won two matches by pin, both in 2:56, then scored a 7-3 decision over Monroeville's Daniel Smith in the finals at 170.

Lloyd had three pins in 1:26, 1:08, and 3:14 over St. Paul's Ben Meyer in the finals. Klima also had three pins to win his weight in 48 seconds, 3:18, and in 1:35 over Crestiew's Aidan Godsey.

Placing third for Plymouth was Colton Sparks (170) and Adler Horne (285). Finishing fourth to also advance for the Big Red was Cameron Wagers (106), Nick Roberts (113), Noah Trimmer (138), Shae Sparks (152), Gabe Cox (182), Jacob Jones (195) and Jason Swank (220).

Monroeville's Ashton Homan (113) and Alec Homan (126) finished as individual champions for the Eagles, while Daniel Smith (170) was second, Hunter Vogus (132) and Brayden Schuller (160) were both third, and Mickolas Takacs (120) was fourth.

Ashton Homan had two pins (:16, 3:27) and a 4-1 decision over Edison's Fantuzzi in the finals. Alec Homan had two pins (:55, :46) and a 2-1 decision over Crestview's Hayden Kuhn in the finals.

The Flyers had three finalists who took second in Stoll (120), Stieber (145) and Meyer (182). Casper Caizzo (106) was third and Aiden Naseman (132) was fourth for St. Paul.

Mikey Dalton (152) placed second for New London, while Connor Robbins (126) was fourth for Willard. Jayden Strickland placed third at 126 for South Central.
