EastEnders has aired heartbreaking scenes as Mila Marwa tries to protect her sister Kioni from FGM.

Mila has been harbouring secret worries about her younger sister's safety in recent episodes, after hearing Kioni speaking about their family planning a special trip for her.

In Tuesday's (May 25) episode, Mila's desperation ramped up as Kioni mentioned how excited she was to take this mystery holiday with their mum.

Her first attempt to protect Kioni was to convince Kathy to let her stay with them instead of going on the trip, but Kathy explained Kioni could only stay for dinner.

That's when Mila was forced to explain to Kathy the real reason for her worries, revealing this trip was nothing like her and Kioni's parents were making it seem.

"She's the age now to be cut," she explained to a stunned Kathy. "You'd call it FGM. She doesn't know anything about it."

When Kathy questioned how Mila knew this could be happening to Kioni, Mila revealed she knew first-hand because her mum had arranged for the same thing for her.

"It's exactly what happened to me," she tearfully told Kathy.

Viewers know that Mila had run away to Walford to escape her religious extremist family, who'd persecuted her because she is attracted to women.

While Mila has reconnected with her mother in recent weeks, her family has not been willing to accept her — and Mila has grown increasingly alarmed over their influence over her younger sister.

EastEnders will reveal the next phase of this powerful storyline on Thursday (May 27) at 7.30pm on BBC One.
