Early morning April snow showers hit parts of region
Apr. 16—Some southeastern Connecticut residents awoke Friday morning to find their lawns covered in snow.
Early morning snow showers were scattered across the region Friday, mostly hitting the towns of Norwich, Griswold and Colchester.
A light dusting of snow accumulated in some towns, with less then a quarter-inch in Norwich, less than a half-inch in Griswold and just over a half-inch in Colchester, according to Western Connecticut State University Meteorologist Gary Lessor.
National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki said that snow in mid-April "isn't something we typically see, but we're still in that time of year where it can get cold."
An area of low pressure moving over the East Coast from Cape Cod caused temperatures to drop as precipitation fell, according to Ciemnecki.
"It's always possible to get snow this time of year," he said.
He said northern areas in Connecticut were seeing more snow than the coastline Friday morning.
According to the weather service, temperatures were expected to be in the mid-40s the rest of the day with rain showers until about 4 p.m.
