Eagles place third at HCC Tourney

May 17—CICERO — The Zionsville boys golf team fell a few shots short of winning the Hoosier Crossroads Conference title on Monday afternoon at Bear Slide.

But as the sectional approaches, the Eagles are still getting closer to where they ultimately want to be.

Zionsville shot a 307 on Monday to place third in the conference behind Westfield (299) and HSE (301).

"I'm pretty happy overall," Zionsville head coach Steve Simmons said. "I didn't think anyone was going to put a 299 out there, and today they did. I thought we had a chance to get to 303-304, and the conditions got tough on the backside which made a difference. All the things that right for us on Saturday at Trophy Club (where the Eagles placed second with a 303), we struggled a little bit, but that's the game."

The Eagles placed two players on the all-conference team.

Evan Poland shot a career-best 75 to make the team.

"I am really happy for Evan," Simmons said. "He is going to play college golf, and has just happened to be on a really talented high school team where he is fighting for the fifth spot his whole career. He was line to get it as a freshman and junior, and he has solidified that now. He's worked hard for it, and I am really proud of him and the way he played today."

Andrew Wall also shot a 75 to be on the all-conference team.

Simmons said Wall's consistency has been great for the Eagles all year.

"He has been solid tee to green all year," Simmons said. "He hasn't putted the way he would like, but if he gets hot with the putter, some under-par scores are coming. He is still averaging around 75-76 for us and has really played consistent all year. I'm happy he got all-conference and in this conference, that's a tall order."

Adam Melliere shot a 77 and Hayden Orbaugh shot an 80 to round out the scoring Eagles.

Mac Dudasko shot an 82 and Bryce Conlee an 85.

Zionsville has three tournaments left before the sectional.

"We still haven't had all five guys play well on the same day," Simmons said. "Typically we can find that at the sectional, but we haven't found it yet. If we can get all five guys to play well on the same day, we can be really good. We still have to clean up some rounds. We have too many double bogeys that we need to clean up. If we do that, we'll be really prepared come sectional time."
