Dyer's monster poster, Brooks' 27 points spark Dixie past Green Canyon

Dixie's Cam Dyer rocks the rim during the first quarter of the Flyers' 71-60 win over Green Canyon on Friday.

Early in the first quarter in Saturday afternoon's matchup between Dixie High (3-0) and Green Canyon (2-2), Dixie senior wing Cam Dyer made his presence felt with a thunderous dunk, sparking a 17-2 run that propelled the Flyers to a 71-60 win.

Dyer, a gifted 6-foot-6 wing with obvious athleticism, caught the ball at the top of the key, drove into the paint and rose up over the 6-foot-6 Dallas Day for a thunderous slam, sending the Flyer faithful into a frenzy.

"I saw the hole and I saw how far back he was playing I just took the opportunity," recalled Dyer. "It was fun and my teammates set me up for it."

The slam ignited a huge run, with Dyer adding four more, Risko Brooks adding five points and Kyle Lemke tallying four to put Dixie up 22-7 at the end of the first quarter.

"That was the biggest thing we were talking about was energy," said Head Coach Tyler Roberts said. "I felt like our first half energy was down and Cam can bring energy."

Brooks finished the game with 27 points to lead all scorers. Bronson Barben finished with eight points and 20 rebounds.

Dyer, who had never played organized basketball before this season, is surrounded by a veteran supporting cast of Barben, Grant Carter, and Kean Webb.

"It's been awesome," Dyer said. "The coaches and my teammates have been helping a lot. They've taken me in as FLYFAM so I thank them for that."

Dyer, who finished with 13 points, brought just about a full arsenal to the floor on Saturday, showing off good vision on offense and defensive anticipation with a big-time rejection from the weak side earlier in the first quarter.

"I thought he played within himself. He's still learning to play," Roberts said. "Yesterday, he forced some stuff and I gave him a goal today of being under control and letting the game come to him."

Despite allowing the big run, Green Canyon managed to right the ship and eventually cut the Dixie lead from 15 down to five in the third quarter.

"We got a little selfish there and that's kind of been the story, right?" Roberts said. "We have to learn how to play together. Usually, we feel like we're open the first option and shoot it. We need to get it through and get everybody touches and into the flow and then we'll get a better option."

The Flyers recovered and pulled away in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, opening up a 60-43 lead and cruising the rest of the way to move to 3-0 on the young season.
