DWU football Gameday: Tigers host No. 2 Northwestern

Oct. 22—The 2021 Dakota Wesleyan University football team is looking to get its fourth win of the season as they host NAIA's No 2-ranked Northwestern this weekend. Here's what to know ahead of Saturday's matchup.

When: 1 p.m. Saturday

Where: Joe Quintal Field

Records: Northwestern 7-0, DWU 3-4

Coaches: DWU's Ross Cimpl (56-47 in 10 seasons); Northwestern's Matt McCarty (49-15 in six seasons)

All-time series: 22nd meeting all-time. DWU trails in the series, 17-4, and have lost four of the last five meetings in the series. DWU last beat Northwestern was Oct. 22, 2016 at home by a score of 44-27.

Last meeting: Northwestern 50, Dakota Wesleyan 16 on Sept. 19, 2020 in Orange City, Iowa.

Notes about the Tigers: Dakota Wesleyan is coming off a 45-13 loss to then No. 18 Dordt last week in Iowa. The Tigers had 441 total offense yards in their last outing, 180 passing and 261 yards rushing. DWU's defense has the fifth most sacks, 24, amongst the 98 teams in NAIA football. The Tigers defense that allows 157 yards rushing and 179 yards passing this season, is lead by Cody Reichelt with nine sacks and 60 tackles, along with Dominick Warmbein who has four sacks and 31 tackles. DWU looks to slow down a Northwestern offense that averages 162 yards rushing and 328 yards passing this year.

Notes about the Red Raiders: Northwestern is coming off a 63-7 win against Jamestown on Saturday, Oct. 16 and still haven't lost a game this entire season. Northwestern scored nine touchdowns and had 488 yards passing and 286 yards rushing in their last outing. The Red Raiders have outscored opponents 334 to 82 and have won each game by an average of 36 points. Northwestern averages 328 yards passing per game and quarterback Blake Fryar has thrown over 1,900 yards and 22 touchdowns so far this season.
