Dwight Gooden relives Cy Young season and '86 Mets World Series run on 'Old Baseball Cards'
On this day in 1996, Dwight Gooden threw a no-hitter for the New York Yankees. It was another chapter in one of the fascinating and famous baseball careers of his era.
He entered the league as a force, a dominant 19-year-old Rookie of the Year for the New York Mets, then the next year, in 1985, he won the Cy Young with 24 wins and a 1.53 ERA. It was 35 years ago, and one of the best pitching seasons in history. It was followed up with the famous ‘86 Mets championship run. Doc Gooden was on top of the world in those days.
We’re talking about all about that ’80s dominance on an all-new episode of “Old Baseball Cards” — Yahoo Sports’ baseball-card driven trip down memory lane — with Gooden. We talk about his ‘85 Cy Young campaign and find the teammate that he credits for fueling it. We find two Boston Red Sox opponents from the 1986 World Series and Doc has a fantastic line about his buddy Wade Boggs.
Full disclosure: We filmed this episode last summer at the All-Star game. Gooden had some personal issues afterward — which haven’t been uncommon during his meteoric rise and tumultuous career. But he seems to be doing better lately. While opening up packs of 1985 Fleer and 1986 Topps, we saw a Gooden who had plenty of stories and memories from that era to share. At the end, we made a trade, and both of us came away pretty happy.
