This week the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to take a very low risk/high reward move in signing quarterback Dwayne Haskins to a futures contract. Haskins is a former first-round pick who burned his bridges with the Washington Football Team and is hoping to get a fresh start with the Steelers entering his third NFL season.

Haskins’ former teammate, quarterback Alex Smith offered some advice to Haskins as he starts the next chapter in his career and we sincerely hope he listens.

“I think the first thing that I hope with Dwayne and I’ve told him you don’t have a chance until you’ve eliminated a lot of the distractions that are going on in your life,” Smith said.

Pittsburgh seems to be hedging their bets that the environment of the Steelers locker room will have a positive influence on a young man who hasn’t shown the best judgment off the field. There is no denying the physical tools Haskins has. But Steelers fans are all too familiar with talented guys who can’t get out of their own way.
