Dunbeck named economic development director

May 8—HIGH POINT — The city announced Friday that Sandy Dunbeck has been named economic development director.

She's held the job on an interim basis since Jan. 1, and interim City Manager Randy McCaslin appointed her to the permanent position after a candidate search and round of interviews.

Dunbeck said she found out Wednesday morning she'd gotten the job.

"I interviewed and competed just like any other applicant would, and I understand there was a fairly large pool, so I'm proud to have been selected," she said. "I love working in High Point, and I think it is the best place to work that I have been throughout my career, so I'm just happy to continue to be able to do that."

Dunbeck came to High Point in 2006 after working in economic development for Greensboro and Rockingham County.

She served as executive vice president under Loren Hill, who retired as the city's economic development chief Jan. 1.

She's credited with helping the city land several major economic development projects during her career, including DC Blox, which confirmed Wednesday that it plans to build a data center here that the city says could end up being a $305 million project.

Other business locations and expansions she helped land include Amada, Ralph Lauren Corp., Thomas Built Buses, Hot Shots Distributing and Puroast Coffee.

"We work with a large number of projects, whether they're existing companies or new companies, throughout all the stages," Dunbeck said. "Working to provide great customer service to each and every one of them is something important to our entire team."

She was recognized as economic developer of the year by the North Carolina Economic Developers Association in 2015.

Dunbeck has a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Tech and is also a graduate of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma.
