Drew Brees says he's 'on borrowed time' as he enters his 20th season in search of another ring

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees knows his time in the NFL is coming to a close. While Brees hasn’t discussed whether he’s playing his final NFL season, the quarterback says he’s “on borrowed time” heading into 2020, according to ESPN.
At 41, Brees is among the oldest players in the NFL. And while he’s still playing at a high level, the number of quarterbacks who have put up Pro Bowl-caliber numbers at that age are few and far between.
If Brees is hoping to win another Super Bowl before hanging up his cleats, it might have to come this season. Brees — who already has a job lined up once he retires — could leave the game after the 2020 season. If he does come back in 2021, Brees’ age makes him a candidate for a steep decline.
The Saints seem to realize Brees could walk away from football after the 2020 season. The team attempted to creatively circumvent the salary cap with a sign-and-trade deal for Jadeveon Clowney. The NFL reportedly wouldn’t have approved that deal, but, hey, the Saints tried.
Drew Brees will face Tom Brady in Week 1
While Brees’ comment hints that retirement could come soon, Tom Brady has shown it’s possible for quarterbacks to keep playing at a high level after they hit 40. Brees will have a nice reminder of that Sunday, when the Saints take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1. It will be the first time in NFL history that two quarterbacks over 40 will start against each other.
Despite his age, Brees put up strong numbers last season. In 11 games, he threw for 27 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He’ll try to replicate those numbers — and possibly improve on them — in 2020.
