The Downtown Dance Conservatory will present “The Sleeping Beauty” this weekend, May 20-22, at the Mort Glosser Amphitheatre. Each showing of the ballet performance will begin at 8 p.m.

"Sleeping Beauty," by Tchaikovsky, is one of the most widely performed ballet and musical scores in the world.

The inspiration for DDC's presentation of the story, according to Director Linze Rickles McRae, has been taken from the original Marius Petipa choreography and story from Charls Perrault. However, McRae added some "interesting twists" on the origins and culture of the story.

The production tells the entire tale of Aurora's life, from being cursed by the dark fairy Carabosse at her christening to dying after pricking her finger on a sewing needle; to having the curse altered by the Lilac Fairy to instead put her into a deep sleep; to seeing the curse broken by the magic of all the realm fairies combined.

DDC, currently housed in the Hardin Center, last interpreted the tale during its 2008 piece known as "The Walking Beauty" and in a news release said it is excited to bring new life to the story in the present day.

Tickets are available online at culturalarts.org/boxoffice or at the Hardin Center, and at the gate on the evening of each performance.
