Dover's Ryan McVicker captures the Division I regional boys shot put championship
Dover senior Ryan McVicker was unable to attend his high school graduation Friday night.
And with good reason.
McVicker was busy winning the Division I regional boys shot put title with a showing of 53 feet, 5 1/2 inches during the final day of the regional track and field meet held at Pickerington North High School Friday night.
McVicker, who threw a half inch better than Kelton Arledge of Logan, saved his best throw for last as he compiled marks of 47-02.00, 50-08.00, 50-09.00, 50-10.50 and the winning mark of 53-05.00.
He did receive his diploma as a photo of him wearing his cap and gown was shown when his name was announced in absentia during the graduation ceremonies online.
The top four finishers in each event automatically qualified to the state tournament next week in Columbus.
New Philadelphia's Owen Brady finished out of the top four in the 1600 as he finished fifth by breaking his own school record with a 4:14.26, but he qualified for the state meet with an at-large bid.
Brady also finished fifth in the boys 3200 with a 9:24.26. O'Rhen Martin jumped 6-1 to finish seventh in the high jump.
Division III at Perry
Tuscarawas Central Catholic's Jackson Triplett is heading off to the state meet again after he won the boys 1600 with a time of 4:16.68 in the Division III regional track and field meet at Perry High School.
The Xavier University commit finished ahead of Inter-Valley Conference and East Canton foe Gabe Shilling, who posted a 4:18.27. The Hornets won the regional team title.
He also finished second in the 3200 with a 9:31.41
Newcomerstown's Braxton Wilson was also a regional champion as he claimed the boys high jump title with a 6-4 effort.
Braxton's teammate at Newcomerstown Caitlin Green was the runner up in the girls pole vault with a 10-4 showing. Only Ainsley Hamsher of Orrville was better at 12-9.
The top four finishers in each event automatically qualified to the state tournament next week in Columbus.
Garaway's Makayla Sitzlar became the Pirates first ever two-time, two-event state qualifier as she finished third in the discus with a 115-10.
On Wednesday, Sitzlar claimed the fourth-and-final state qualifying spot in the girls shot with a heave of 37 feet, 2¾ inches.
Garaway teammate Kenadi Yoder placed third in the girls 300 hurdles with a 46.84.
Silas Miller of Tusky Valley finished outside of the automatic qualifying spot in the the boys high jump as he was fifth with a 6-3 showing.
