'Don't Look Up' film shot on Fall River Battleship earns Oscar nods

The nominations are in and, don't look now but "Don't Look Up" — the sci-fi disaster-flick comedy filmed on Battleship Massachusetts in Fall River — has nabbed four Oscar nods.

Nominations for the 2022 Oscars were announced Tuesday, and the much-anticipated and star-studded Netflix film released Dec. 24 was listed among contenders for the most sought-after award — Best Picture.

"Don't Look Up" is also up for Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score.

It's shaping up to be an exciting 94th Academy Awards on March 27, at least for local fans rooting for the film that shined a spotlight on the Spindle City in its latest big screen moment — even if that aerial shot of the Braga Bridge and the Battleship Massachusetts was fleeting.

"Don't Look Up" drummed up quite a bit of buzz when Hollywood crews set up at the Battleship Cove in December 2020, and spectators gathered on the Heritage State Park boardwalk to watch fireworks being launched from the stern of the Big Mamie during filming.

'Good publicity for the ship': DiCaprio, Streep and Lawrence shoot movie aboard Big Mamie

The Battleship provided the setting for a major political rally scene, and little did many locals know at the time but there were some A-list celebs on board, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep.

The movie was also shot in various other locales throughout Massachusetts, including Brockton, Framingham, Worcester, Boston and at the Wheaton College campus in Norton.

While it wasn't the first film to be shot in Fall River — "Jungleland" most recently brought "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam to the city in 2018 — “Don’t Look Up” is the biggest-budget feature film, with the biggest names, ever shot here.

Remember these?: Filming of 'Don't Look Up' not Fall River's first brush with stardom

Director Adam McKay’s apocalyptic thriller about a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth and the efforts of a pair of low-level astronomers — played by DiCaprio and Lawrence — to save the planet and warn an apathetic world that humanity is facing the end of existence, is stacked with impressive names.

Streep, a 21-time Oscar nominee and three-time winner, plays the goofball U.S. president. Rounding out the cast are names like Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans and more.

So what are its chances of earning that coveted golden Oscar statuette?

Reviews of the controversial comedy, which satirizes the global response to climate change, have been mixed and it faces some stuff competition in the Best Picture category. Other Best Picture nominees include “CODA,” “Drive My Car,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “Nightmare Alley,” Steven Spielberg's “West Side Story,” and “The Power of the Dog,” a revisionist Western that dominated the Academy Awards with 12 nominations.

Review: Fall River's Battleship Cove looks good, but 'Don't Look Up' is a smug mix of angry comedy

One reviewer predicts it's destined for victory based on its star power and the fact that it is among the most recognizable films on the list, having been seen by a sizable group of people. It didn't hurt that "Don't Look Up" dropped on Netflix the day before Christmas amid an omicron surge, prime time for hunkering down at home and binge watching.

Haven't watched it yet? It's time to get caught up. "Don’t Look Up" is streaming exclusively on Netflix. Check out the trailer here.
