Studies dating back to the 1960s have argued that humans are born with two fears by survivalist means: a fear of loud sounds and a fear of falling. For some, the fear of heights has persisted into adulthood and can be labeled as an actual phobia. For thrill-seekers, it's evolved to become a more pleasurable past time because of the release of hormones.
"There is some evidence to suggest that thrill-seeking is like anything pleasurable -- gambling, eating, -- it releases dopamine," said Seth Norrholm, a translational neuroscientist at Emory University, to CNN in 2015. "We know that the more you reward something, the more that they do it."
Thrill-seekers can get their fix in a variety of ways, from conquering the highest peak to sky diving to bridge jumping. And luckily for these daredevils, there are plenty of destinations around the world that give in to their fixation.
