JACKSON — A huge second half from Coldwater blew open a tight game at the half Friday night as the Cardinals paid a visit to Jackson Lumen Christi for Interstate 8 play.

The teams played nearly even basketball throughout the first half and it was Coldwater taking advantage of the halftime break, making the necessary adjustments to quickly turn the game on its head. Coldwater outscored Lumen Christi 24-1 in a dominant third quarter on their way to a solid 67-35 win.

The two conference rivals played to a stalemate in the first quarter, ending the first eight minute period all knotted up at 13-13.

Coldwater took a little control in the second quarter, slowly building a small four point lead at the halftime buzzer, leading the Titans 31-27 at the half.

Coldwater has shown throughout the season a propensity to come roaring out of the halftime break, employing any minor changes and adjustments before quickly seizing control of the contest. That is exactly what happened Friday night, no deviation and no change. Coldwater absolutely dominated the third quarter as the squad played lock down defense, which in turn allowed the offense to pull away and open up a big lead.

In all the Cardinals only allowed a single point in the third quarter, outscoring the Titans 24-1 throughout the third to open up a commanding 55-28 lead.

Coldwater did not let off the gas in the fourth and final period, outscoring Lumen Christi 12-7, as they went on to improve to 9-1 overall on the season and 7-1 in the Interstate 8 with a 67-35 victory.

The Cardinals employed a very balanced attack Friday night as four different players scored in double figures.

Coldwater’s winning effort was led by big man Evan Sloan who recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Brandon Downs also hit double digits to help in the Cardinal win, scoring 12 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The other big man in the paint for Coldwater, Donte Work, also had a big game inside, scoring 11 points to go along with four rebounds and two steals.

Senior Ethan Crabtree also hit double digits in scoring, pouring in 10 points to go along with three steals.

Rounding out the Coldwater winning effort was Lu Lebron with nine points, five rebounds and five assists; Joseph Closson with two steals and a bevy of hustle plays; and Brock Thornton with six points.

With the win Coldwater improves to 9-1 overall on the year and 7-1 in the Interstate 8 while Lumen Christi falls to 2-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

Coldwater will enjoy an entire week off before hitting the court again next Friday when they host Hastings for a boy/girl doubleheader as part of their annual Hall of Fame night.

Coldwater Freshman boys fall to Lumen Christi

JACKSON — The Coldwater Freshman Cardinals fell to Lumen Christi Friday night by the score of 61-38.

Kendall Austin led the way for Coldwater with 12 points while Drew Ennis added 10 points. Coldwater will next see action next Thursday when they face Hastings.
