Dolphins LB Melvin Ingram named Defensive Player of the Month for September

Dolphins outside linebacker Melvin Ingram has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September, the NFL announced Thursday.

In the first three games of the season, Ingram has recorded two sacks, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

It’s the second Defensive Player of the Award honor for Ingram, 33, who signed with the Dolphins in May. He leads the Dolphins in sacks and fumble recoveries and is the only NFL player to record a sack and score a defensive touchdown this season.

“When you look at him from a year ago, you still saw the explosion, the get off, the strength,” defensive coordinator Josh Boyer said Wednesday. “And we just thought it was a good fit for what we do and what we ask our guys to do. He sure hasn’t disappointed. I know there’s a little bit of a learning curve when it’s a little bit of a new scheme, but a lot of things that we’ve asked him to do, he’s done in his career before, and he’s a true professional. He cares about the team and he works hard and he works at his craft and I’m glad we have him.”
