These dog names are the most popular, US report finds. Which others made the list?

Dog owners are fans of two pet names — and they’re now the most popular in the United States.

Luna ranks No. 1 for female dogs while Max is the favorite for male dogs, according to results published on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The online pet-care resource Rover.com said it created the list after it studied data that millions of users shared on its website. The data was gathered in September and October, marking the 10th straight year of the analysis.

“While Max has stayed consistent as the top male dog name over the years, Luna has finally surpassed Bella as the top name for female dogs this year,” the report said.

Which other names are most common for people to give their pups? Rounding out the top five were:

  • Bella (female) and Charlie (male)

  • Daisy (female) and Cooper (male)

  • Lucy (female) and Milo (male)

  • Lily (female) and Buddy (male)

In addition to ranking the nation’s favorite dog names, Rover.com also considered those that were “trending.” This year’s hottest name is the same as a character on “Euphoria,” an HBO show about high schoolers.

“Gen Z’s favorite drama ‘Euphoria’ didn’t just inspire fashion trends this year — it also inspired the #1 trending dog name of 2022, Fezco, up 3,714% for dogs,” officials wrote in a news release.

While other up-and-coming dog names have reflected the names of movie characters, celebrities and cultural trends, some once-trending pandemic-related names are becoming less popular, according to Rover.com.

“Rover’s database of millions of user-submitted pet names reveals how names we lovingly choose for our pets reflect our passions and lifestyles, and often serve as a time capsule for the moment we welcomed them into our families,” Kate Jaffe, a Rover trend expert, wrote in the news release.

The results come months after the pet insurance website Trupanion also found that dog owners were drawn to the name Luna. That report also determined the Labrador retriever was the most popular breed in the country, McClatchy News reported.
