GALESBURG — The Galesburg High School girls basketball team still has some kinks to work out on the offensive end of the hardwood.

But the Silver Streaks have managed to build a 6-2 overall mark to begin the 2021-22 season.

Last Saturday afternoon in East Moline, Galesburg beat United Township 64-31 to move to 1-2 in Western Big 6 Conference play. Sophomore Kiarra Kilgore finished with 19 points to lead the Silver Streaks.

“I think the Geneseo game (a 60-52 road loss last Thursday) revealed that we’re still not there offensively to where we want to be but we’re making progress," Galesburg coach Evan Massey said Tuesday morning. "Against United Township, I thought offensively we were very good. We were efficient, we ran the ball and we didn’t turn the ball over. A positive was we really had very good success against their zone.”

The Streaks have a pair of league games ahead this week, and they'll both take place inside John Thiel Gym.

Quincy will make the trek to Galesburg on Thursday, and on Saturday the Rocks of Rock Island will come to town.

The Blue Devils held a 4-1 overall mark and 2-1 record in the WB6 heading into the week. This past Saturday, Quincy grabbed a 55-23 win at home over Sterling in a league contest. Sophomore Taylor Fohey led the Blue Devils with 14 points, and sophomore Leah Chevalier added 13 points for Quincy.

“Quincy is going to be an interesting game because on one hand they’re young but they also have some experience," Massey said. "They're very post oriented. Their post players are physical and position themselves well. Offensively they really do a good job of working to get the ball inside.”

As of Monday, Rocky held a 6-3 overall mark and 2-1 record in league outings. The Rocks suffered a 61-44 loss at Geneseo last Saturday.

"Rock Island has it going right now. Their players play hard and they defend well," said Massey, who is in his 44th season guiding the Streaks and holds a 949-374 career mark as Galesburg's coach. "They have a good mix of perimeter and post players offensively.”

Knox women mentor Future Streaks

Knox College's women's basketball team held a clinic at Thiel Gym on Sunday for the members of the Galesburg girls seventh and eighth grade Future Streaks program.

"It was a great afternoon," said Massey, a 1974 Knox grad, who guided the college's first women's basketball team to a 4-3 overall record and did so in the 1973-74 season. "You could tell the junior high players had so much respect for the college women. It was really a good event.”
