Woman thrown by boyfriend's edit of Disney classic: 'I thought there was something wrong'
A filmmaker is taking the internet by storm after he used his video-editing skills to ask his girlfriend a very important question.
Lee Loechler proposed to his high school sweetheart, Dr. Sthuthi David, by editing himself into her favorite movie, Disney’s animated "Sleeping Beauty." He screened his secretly altered version for David in a "crowded" theater, which was actually full of the couple’s friends and family.
Loechler posted an incredible video of David’s reaction to YouTube on Jan. 9, where it immediately went viral. The clip was viewed more than 2 million times in its first day.
"It’s not every day you get to propose to your High School sweetheart. For the past six months, I’ve been working with an illustrator to animate my girlfriend and myself into her favorite movie, 'Sleeping Beauty,'" the caption for Loechler’s video reads.
In the clip, Loechler and David are sitting in a darkened theater, as a large screen shows the edited movie. During a crucial scene in which Sleeping Beauty is kissed awake by her rescuer, David begins to realize that she bears a striking resemblance to the princess, while Loechler resembles the prince.
The prince edited to look like Loechler then opens a box containing a ring and proposes to the princess on screen. Immediately after, Loechler gets down on one knee and does the same thing in real life.
David, of course, said yes. She can be seen crying as she realizes what’s happening before later turning to laughter.
"I thought there was something wrong with the movie!" she tells Loechler.
Loechler’s surprises didn’t stop there though. He then revealed that the theater had been filled with David’s loved ones, as well as strangers he had recruited through a request in the r/Boston Reddit page.
"Seeking random internet strangers to help fill a small theater, where I will surprise propose to my girlfriend," Loechler’s post read. He also offered free pizza and beer as well as a “wholesome and memorable Monday night” to anyone willing to participate.
Loechler later celebrated the successful proposal with an Instagram post, saying: "The only thing better than seeing the smartest person I know completely dumbfounded was knowing we’d get to live happily ever after together."
