Here's why Demi Lovato really skipped the VMAs

Demi Lovato is being accused of shading Taylor Swift during the VMAs.

As the awards show took place on Monday — and Swift was one of the night’s biggest winners — Lovato took to Instagram to say she was skipping the show because she was working on something that is awesome and makes her “so happy.”

Lovato hopped back on Instagram after that to add that she skipped the show for “a reason,” then added that the reason is that, “I just hate award[s] shows.”

While we now know the project was related to a three-episode arc on Will & Grace (!), Swift fans interpreted it as some sort of a Swift dis — because Lovato is team Scooter Braun amid his spat with Swift. Lovato was called “petty.”

Some of Lovato’s fans pointed out how ridiculous it is that anything Lovato does is now interpreted as a Swift slam.

Though Swifties held strong.

Lovato has been recording her first album since her overdose — and the first project since she signed to Braun’s management company. She also joined the cast of Will Ferrell's upcoming comedy Eurovision. But it’s now known that the project she was hinting about in her IG stories — that she revealed on Tuesday — was shooting Will & Grace. According to Entertainment Weekly, the singer-actress will be in three episodes during the show’s final season. Her role is a mystery, but she’ll be playing a character named Jenny and working opposite Eric McCormack. It will air in 2020 when the NBC show returns.

Swift had a huge night at the VMAs. She won Video of the Year for “You Need to Calm Down.” Her performance of “You Need to Calm Down” and “Lover” had her fans freaking out. Though there was also an embarrassing moment — when John Travolta confused a drag queen for Swift. (Embarrassing for Travolta though really.)

In July, Swift lashed out at Braun after he purchased her former record label, Big Machine Label Group, including her song catalog. She accused him of being a bully during her career and saw the sale as an act of personal revenge. Lovato, who had recently become one of Braun’s clients (along with a high-profile list of talent including Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber), publicly defended the music manager in the feud, leading to this drama between Swifties and Lovatics.
