Dickinson defeat Legacy in third place game

Jun. 6—It was a rematch of the WDA championship game in the third place game of the Class A state tournament with Dickinson taking on Bismarck Legacy.

With the disappointment of falling in the semifinal round, both teams were looking to end the weekend on a positive note.

It was a different result from their matchup a week ago as the Midgets did all of their damage in the second inning to defeat the Sabers 7-5 Saturday afternoon in Mandan.

Troy Berg drew a walk to begin the rally in the second inning. Landon Aman later hit a single to left field to put two on base for Dickinson.

Isaac Daley then stepped up to the plate and smashed a three-run home run to right center field for Dickinson's first runs of the game, but they still trailed 4-3.

Aiden Haich reached base with a double to left field. Logan Bentz followed with a walk and Carson Weiler sent Haich home with a single himself to tie the game 4-4.

Three more runs would be tacked on, highlighted by an RBI-triple from Berg to give Dickinson all the runs they would need for the victory.

Before the inning, the Midgets found themselves in a 4-0 deficit. Legacy scored two runs a piece in the first two innings.

Ben Patton had a two-run home run for the Sabers in the first inning to give them the early lead. Carter Klipfel hit an RBI-triple in the second for a 3-0 lead. He would later score on a groundout to extend the lead to four runs.

Legacy were able to put two more runners on base in the inning, threatening to extend their lead even more, but Dickinson was able to tag out the Saber's Cru Walker before he reached home plate.

They would add another run to their total in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Midgets for the second time in a week.

Drew Kovash, who started Dickinson's game yesterday, got the ball to begin today's game as well but for just one inning. Jadon Bast, who picked up the win, went four and two thirds of an inning, allowing five hits, three runs, and striking out three.

Haich pitched the final inning, a scoreless effort, to earn the save.

It was the second consecutive game the Midgets played clean defense and finished the game without an error.

Berg, Aman and Haich each had multiple hits for Dickinson. Berg also collected two RBI. Dickinson outhit Legacy 10-8.

The Midget's season ends with a 28-6 record and a third place finish in Class A.
