Devout Brewing in Penn Township expands outdoor seating

Jun. 20—It doesn't typically get loud and rowdy at Devout Brewing in Penn Township.

But if it did, co-owner Matt Joseph wouldn't have to worry about complaints from the neighbors.

Situated in the Bushy Run Corporate Park off Mellon Road, all of Joseph's neighbors are pretty well cleared out by 6 p.m., leaving a quiet area with easy access to William Penn Highway.

"It's far enough from (Route) 22 to be quiet, but there's also a lot of residential housing around," said Joseph, 35, of Monroeville, who is in the midst of expanding Devout's outdoor seating area and adding shade.

"Our hours are basically the opposite of everyone else's," he said. "Spaces like this are really well-suited to breweries."

The expansion will see a 30-by-60-foot concrete pad poured along the side of the building in a freshly leveled area, with a wall surrounding it.

"We had our picnic tables out here before, but the hill sloped up, and it was kind of tough to set your beer down," Joseph said. The flat seating area and pad will also make room for the addition of four more picnic tables, for a total of 12.

"Well, it'll be 12 at some point," Joseph said with a laugh. "It's tough to get your hands on a picnic table right now. It might still be eight for a while."

With eight in-house brews on tap and more seating on the way, Joseph is ready for a busy summer now that covid-19 restrictions have largely been lifted statewide.

"In a corporate park, pretty much any grassy area offers an opportunity like this," he said. "We're looking forward to it."
