Detroit News top softball players: Howell's Wolverton out to cap career with another dominant year

Apr. 16—David Goricki of The Detroit News breaks down the top 20 high school softball players in Metro Detroit.

Avrey Wolverton has been an impact player since she stepped on Howell's campus her freshman year, and is a big reason Howell advanced to the Division 1 state semifinals in 2018 and to the state championship game in 2019.

After not having a chance to make a return trip to Michigan State University's Secchia Stadium last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wolverton will try to help her team get there one more time before heading south to play at Furman next year.

Wolverton showed she is already playing at the top of her game with a 3-0 record on the mound this season. She has allowed just one run, including a perfect game against Livonia Stevenson when she struck out 19 of the 21 batters she faced.

"I just want to have a good season this year," said Wolverton, who hit .470 with 17 home runs and 60 RBIs and went 8-1 on the mound with a 1.40 ERA as a sophomore.

"I had a lot of good players pushing me to play at the level that I was at back when I was a sophomore, so hopefully I can continue to play that well this season."

What did Wolverton do last summer since her high school season was shut down?

"I was just extremely bored and bummed out that we couldn't play," Wolverton said. "We were able to play travel ball during the summer which was good. I played for Turnin2 16U and we played in South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama. Played all over but not in Michigan.

"I pitch a lot on my travel team so I'm ready (to be Howell's ace) since we had Molly (Carney) in past years. I rely a lot on my rise and screwball."

What worked during the perfect game and win over Stevenson?

"Honestly my back was hurting so I threw nice and easy," Wolverton said. "Obviously, having a good defense behind me helps a lot. My screwball was working, too."
