Des Moines teenager charged with attempted murder after shooting outside bar on city's east side

A Des Moines teenager has been arrested in connection to a shooting outside an east-side bar that left one man in critical condition.

The 17-year-old, who has not been identified, was charged Sunday with attempted murder, willful injury, assault while participating in a felony and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said in a news release they received a report of a shooting just before 10 p.m. Thursday in the 2900 block of East Grand Avenue. A 46-year-old Des Moines man had been shot and was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to the release.

The victim attempted to intervene in an argument between the 17-year-old and a woman in the parking lot of Maingate Bar & Grill, police said. The teen, who was on supervised release following a July 2020 firearms conviction, attempted to physically assault the man before allegedly shooting him, according to the release.
