The Derry Girls season 3 finale almost had an alternate ending
Derry Girls came to an end on Tuesday [16 May], and fans have been saying goodbye to their favourite characters for the last time. But creator Lisa McGee just revealed things could have ended very differently.
After three very joyful series, Erin Quinn, Michelle Mallon, Clare Devlin, Orla McCool and James Maguire made their final appearance on screen, in an hour-long final episode. Set after a one year time jump in 1998, the finale joined the gang at Orla and Erin's joint 18th birthday party, while the Good Friday agreement referendum is taking place.
While fans are praising it as the perfect ending, Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee just revealed she originally planned to tie things up very differently. "[The episode] would have been [different] before our dates were pushed because of covid," she told Radio Times.
The episode also saw Erin and Michelle clash over Michelle's brother Niall, who was in prison for killing someone, as part of the agreement saw paramilitary prisoners released.
"There was a version of this that was just funny-funny, and the party and the Good Friday Agreement – it was just your typical Derry Girls, where they were like: 'This is hugely annoying', and there was no Michelle and Erin story.
"I remember telling our two execs: 'I have this idea. And I kind of don't want to go near it. Because it's a bit daunting, so I'm hoping you don't like it'. And I told them the Erin and Michelle story, and then they were like: 'Oh God, we like it', and so I had to do it now."
The light and shade is definitely what makes Derry Girls so brilliant.
