Nuggets PG Jamal Murray helped off court with ankle injury against Hornets

Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray had to be helped off the court at the Pepsi Center on Wednesday night after a scary ankle injury.

Murray, late in the first half of their 100-86 win against the Hornets, landed awkwardly on Charlotte guard Terry Rozier’s foot while attempting to contest a 3-pointer in the corner and rolled his left ankle — sending him to the ground in pain.

Murray remained on the ground for several minutes in pain before he was helped off the floor by teammates P.J. Dozier and Vlatko Cancar and led to the locker room.

He did not return, and was officially ruled out with a left ankle injury. Nuggets coach Michael Malone didn’t have much of an update after the game, only that the X-rays came back negative.

“I just looked at it, and it’s rather large. It’s kind of scary,” Malone said. “He rolled it, and those are scary because those kind of injuries, aside from being painful, you don’t want to have Jamal Murray miss an extended period of time. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks and we can get him back.”

Murray finished the night with five points, one rebound and one assist in 15 minutes. The 22-year-old has averaged 17.9 points, 4.7 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game this season in Denver, his fourth in the league.

Though the Nuggets nearly blew a 20-point lead near the end of the third quarter, they held on in the fourth while holding Charlotte to just 17 points in the final period to grab the 14-point win.

Michael Porter led the Nuggets with 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Mason Plumlee added 15 points, and Jerami Grant finished with 14 points.

Rozier led the Hornets with 20 points, shooting 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Devonte’ Graham, P.J. Washington and Miles Bridges each added 14 points. Charlotte has now lost six straight.
