Dennis homers, Kilgore wins twice

Mar. 6—It's the Texas Two-Step Tournament — and it's now also the site of the first varsity career home run for Kilgore High School's Jada Dennis.

Kilgore beat Gladewater, 5-2, on Thursday, then beat Paul Pewitt, 9-6, both as a part of the Texas Two-Step, played annually at Longview's Lear Park. Rain plagued the tournament on Friday, as it has everywhere throughout East Texas, including the baseball Whataburger Oil Belt Classic here at Driller Park (see our story in this section).

If rain doesn't change the schedule or force cancellation, Kilgore had been slated to play Texas High at 11 a.m. and Prairiland at 1 p.m.

The status of the Texas Two-Step games today was uncertain at press time for this print edition of the News Herald.

Looking ahead to next week, the Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to visit Mabank on Tuesday, a 4:30 p.m. junior varsity start, with varsity afterward, and then they're off until the following Tuesday, March 16, when they'll host Lufkin, also starting with JV at 4:30. That night will be military appreciation night at Stream-Flo Park.

Kilgore 5, Gladewater 2: Dennis had a home run and a single in the win. Jaycie Villanueva had two singles and 2 RBI. Alyssa Whitington had a double and an RBI, and Genna Cavanaugh had a single and a stolen base.

Freshman Nawny Sifford pitched and got the win, throwing five innings. She walked just one and struck out three.

Kilgore 9, Paul Pewitt 6: Another freshman, Mylia Dean, got the win in this one, as the Lady Bulldogs moved their overall record on the season to 4-2-2.

Cavanaugh went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Haylee Brown had a triple and scored twice. Dennis had a triple, as well. Villanueva had a single and an RBI, and Bailey Hedges had a single and 2 RBI. Kaitlyn Porter earned two walks.
