  • Demi Lovato, 29, just revealed that they will transition from being "California sober" to full sobriety.

  • In a new Instagram story, the singer explained that "sober sober is the only way to be."

  • Demi has been open about their sobriety before, saying that "recovery isn't a one-size-fits-all solution."

Demi Lovato's sobriety journey began a few years ago, after a drug overdose in 2018. Since then, Demi has used their platform to be candid about their struggle with addiction and their road to recovery.

Back in May, Demi announced they were "California sober." Typically, "California sober" means a person is choosing to remain sober from alcohol, but still uses marijuana, according to Urban Dictionary. (It's important to note that "California sober" is not a medical term.)

Demi's definition was a little different since they have explained in the past that they also chose to drink in moderation. But in a new Instagram Story, the Dancing with the Devil... the Art of Starting Over artist, 29, revealed they are now starting a new journey to full sobriety.

"I no longer support my 'California sober' ways," they wrote. "Sober sober is the only way to be." In rehabilitation facilities and programs, sobriety means completely abstaining from substances, including drugs and alcohol, according to American Addiction Centers.

Demi's post came just one day after they shared a picture of one of their tattoos in memory of their late friend, Thomas Trussell III, on their birthday. Trussell died of a drug overdose back in 2019.

"You're unforgettable," they wrote. "We miss and love you. I mean how gorgeous is @sirtruss."

In their YouTube docuseries, Demi previously opened up about why they originally decided to be "California sober."

"I've learned that shutting a door on things makes me want to open the door even more. I've learned that it doesn't work for me to say 'I'm never gonna do this again,'" they explained in an episode of Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil.

"Telling myself I can never have a drink or smoke marijuana is setting myself up for failure because I am such a black-and-white thinker," Demi added. "I had it drilled into my head for so many years that one drink was equivalent to a crack pipe."

"I also don't want people to hear that and think they could just try having a drink or smoking a joint because it isn't for everyone," they continued. "Recovery isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. shouldn't be forced to get sober if you're not ready. You shouldn't get sober for other people. You have to do it for yourself."
