Delta Air Lines thanks employees with whopping $1.6 billion in bonuses

Delta Air Lines employees really have something to celebrate this upcoming Valentine's Day.

Ed Bastian, Delta's CEO, announced on Monday that Delta will pay out a record $1.6 billion in profit sharing to its employees. This is the sixth year in a row Delta has paid out profit-sharing bonuses of more than $1 billion. The previous record was $1.5 billion in 2016 — which Delta said at the time was the largest profit-sharing payout in corporate history.

Many companies participate in profit-sharing payouts, which means employees receive a percentage of a company's profits based on quarterly or annual earnings.

The bonus payment will be awarded to the company's 90,000 employees on Feb. 14. It will be equivalent to about two months' salary.

The airline's profit rose to $4.8 billion in 2019 and it was ranked the No. 1 airline in the U.S. by the Wall Street Journal.

This announcement comes days after four teachers filed a lawsuit against Delta for dumping jet fuel over a Los Angeles schoolyard, which exposed tens of children to fumes and skin irritation.
